Andrew Erie, loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, October 4, 2015.
He was the husband of Virginia K. Stevens Erie with whom he was married for 58 years.
He was the first born son of Tony and Caterine Marcella Erie, born July 27, 1938 in Grove City, Pennsylvania. At an early age, he helped his father at their family grocery store in Boyers, PA. From childhood, he was a fan of the New York Yankees. As a teenager, Andrew was an avid baseball player playing for the American Legion baseball teams of Boyers, North Washington and Harrisville.
Coinciding with his admiration of locomotives, Andrew was a conductor and trainman on the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad for 45 years having retired in January 2002. During his life, Andrew was extremely active in the Butler County American Legion Baseball Association serving as Chairman of the Board for over 30 years. In light of his love for baseball as a child and having 2 sons who also enjoyed the sport as players, Andrew served as Manager and President for 17 years of the Center Township Baseball Association in Butler. Andrew also served the good people of Center Township for 14 years as their Township Supervisor keeping all of his campaign promises during his years in office. Andrew was a long-time member of St. Andrews Roman Catholic Church where he served for 13 years as an usher.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Kim (Craig) Saul and Katrine M. Erie, both of Butler, PA; his son, Andrew Erie, Jr. of Orchard Park, NY; and his son, Richard (Carey) Erie of Pensacola, FL. In additon, he is survived by 7 grandchildren, David Saul of Prospect, PA; Steven and Matthew Saul, both of Butler, PA; Sierra and Amanda Erie, both of Orchard Park, NY; Dominic and Anthony Erie, both of Pensacola, FL; 3 great-grandchildren and 3 step great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, John (Joyce) Erie of Meadville, PA, 3 brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law from CA, numerous cousins, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen M. Erie of Prospect, PA.
A service to celebrate Andrew Erie’s life will be held at St. Andrews Roman Catholic Church in Center Township, PA with Reverend Father Nicholas J. Argentieri officiating Saturday, October 10, 2015 at 10AM with burial to follow at Epiphany Cemetery in Boyers, PA.
