As more and more people are raising backyard chickens, experts are urging residents to be aware of the risk of salmonella.
Young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems are especially at risk of becoming dangerously ill with diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps.
Salmonella can also be transmitted through eggs that have not been cooked well enough but there are precautions that people can do to limit risk of exposure.
Experts recommend everyone who handles poultry to wash hands thoroughly, do not eat or drink when working in or near birds in pens, and keep poultry out of homes or living areas. Chicken owners should also clean drop pans daily, have dedicated shoes to wear only in poultry pens, and control rodents in the area to help reduce the spread of salmonella.
