Dial Pressure Canner Gauge Testing Day

Event Details: Canning season is almost here and, if you have a dial gauge pressure canner, it’s important to have it checked for accuracy each year. Accurate pressure is critical for safe processing of low acid foods such as green beans, beets, corn, soups, and meats. If the pressure reading on your gauge is not accurate, you may not be killing all the bacteria and spores that could cause illness or death.

Dial pressure gauge testing will be available at the Penn State Extension Butler County office on May 25 and June 24 from 9:00 am to 11:00 am each day. An appointment is required. If you cannot attend at this time, schedule a time to drop off your dial gauge pressure canner lid prior to one of the test dates. You will be notified when testing is complete.

The testing is available at no charge – just bring the canner lid with the gauge or just the gauge. Weighted gauge canner lids do not need to be tested.
