The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the New York Rangers 4-3 in triple overtime last night in the opening game of their best-of-seven Stanley Cup Series. Evgeni Malkin scored the game-winner six minutes into the third extra period.
The goal came after the Penguins lost starting goaltender Casey DeSmith in the second overtime. He was replaced by Louis Domingue (Doe-Ming), who stopped all 17 shots he faced. DeSmith had stopped 48 of the 51 shots he faced in five periods of the game.
The Pens scored three times in the second period after the Rangers took a 2-0 lead. The Rangers tied the game with a short-handed goal late in that second period, and the game remained scoreless until the Malkin game-winner. The Penguins had 83 shots on goal. It was the fifth-longest game in Penguins post-season history.
Game 2 is Thursday at Madison Square Garden. Face-off is 7pm. Pre-game on WISR is 6:30pm.
The Penguins also lost winger Rickard Rickell during the first period after he took a hit to the head from the Rangers Ryan Lindgren. Lindgren would also leave the game later with an injury.
The Penguins organization also announced Tuesday that the big screen will return to the outside of PPG Paints Arena for all home games during their playoff run. Their first home game will be Saturday night.
