The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 in 10-innings last night, in the opening game of a three-game series. With the victory, the Phillies clinched a National League Wild Card spot.
Henry Davis had two hits for the Bucs, including his seventh home run of the year. Bryan Reynolds hit his 24th home run.
Pirates starting pitcher Mitch Keller carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning, when he felt a sensation of pain in his pitching arm and was attended to on the mound. Brandon Marsh hit his next pitch for a home run. Keller would allow two runs on three hits over six innings, but also struck out six batters. That allowed him to move past A.J. Burnett for the second-most in a season by a Pirates right-handed pitcher with 210 strikeouts this season.
David Bednar took the loss, allowing the winning run in the extra frame.
The Milwaukee Brewers clinched the National League Central Division, despite losing 4-1 to St. Louis. Their clinching came after the Chicago Cubs lost 7-6 to the Atlanta Braves.
The Cincinnati Reds defeated the Cleveland Guardians 11-7 last night, and have moved to within 1-1/2 games of the Cubs for the final National League Wild Card.
The Miami Marlins game with the New York Mets was rained out yesterday. The two teams will play a doubleheader today. The Marlins remain a half-game behind Chicago.
In the American League, the Seattle Mariners defeated the Houston Astros 6-2 last night, and moved to within a half-game of Houston for the final American League Wild Card.
Two divisions have yet to be decided, with Baltimore still leading Tampa Bay by 2-1/2 games in the American League East. The Texas Rangers are 2-1/2 games up on Houston in the West.
