A Butler woman has been charged after 160 dead rabbits were found on her property.
In November of 2023, police assisted the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture on a potential outbreak of Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHD) on the 7000 block of Country Club Road in Franklin Township. Upon arrival to the property investigators did not believe it was an RHD outbreak but instead a case of animal neglect. Which led police on scene to take over the investigation.
According to the criminal complaint, the garage where the rabbits stayed was full of feces, urine, and trash. There was also reports of rabbit skeletons in cages. The search of the garage also found 137 living rabbits living in “filthy conditions.”
After discussing it with police and family 68-year-old Wendy Czapski decided to surrender the living rabbits.
Czapski has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals and two counts of neglect of animals.
