Three Butler Intermediate High School students are facing criminal charges for allegedly exposing another student to pineapple.
The victim was so allergic to the fruit that she had to be taken by ambulance to the hospital. Police are classifying the incident as an assault.
According to Butler Township Police, the alleged incident happened in mid-December. Police say a 14-year-old girl intentionally exposed the victim to pineapple, knowing she had a severe allergy to the food. The exposure occurred during lunch, according to a police report.
“The suspect got the pineapple from another student, put the pineapple residue all over her hand, and got the victim to give her a ‘high-five’,” Lt. Matt Pearson said.
During the course of their investigation, police found two other female students were involved. According to police, this was an intentional act.
“It’s well-known at the school,” Lt. Pearson said. “They don’t even serve pineapple during this specific lunch period because of the severe allergy.”
All three students are facing charges in juvenile court. The victim is OK. She was treated and released from the hospital the same day.
