Butler Health System is now administering third doses of the COVID vaccine for those who have compromised immune systems.
Following directions from the CDC and FDA, the hospital will begin administering 3rd shots for immunocompromised patients beginning Wednesday.
In order to schedule a third dose, patients will have to meet the following criteria:
- Currently receiving chemotherapy for cancer
- Has received an organ transplant and is still taking immunosuppressive medication.
- A bone marrow or stem cell transplant within the past two years
- A primary immunodeficiency
- Advanced or untreated HIV
- Currently on a medication that suppresses the immune system
- On dialysis
- Or had a spleen removed by surgery.
Butler Health System’s Infectious Disease Director Dr. John Love explains the reasoning behind the CDC’s decision.
“Basically, they looked at data and said that these patients don’t have the same response to two shots that the average population does,” Love said. “But research found that if they get a third shot, they get more protection.”
