Butler County Elections Director Shari Brewer hopes to have the county’s new voting system in place in time for the 2019 general election this November.
When voters head to the polls in a couple weeks for the May primary they will be using the current electronic system.
When the new system is installed, what will happen to the old system?
Butler County Commissioner Kevin Boozel hopes local school districts could use the 535 old machines- either as a way to encourage kids to register to vote, or to use in student elections.
“We’re looking into it now,” Boozel said during a meeting Wednesday.
The state did mandate that all counties get new voting systems that were equipped with verifiable paper trials in time for the 2020 presidential election, but local officials say Butler County’s current system was nearing the end of its life span anyway and was due to be replaced.
