The Mars Area School Board is concerned that an upcoming PennDOT road construction project would compromise the safety of students.
During a school board meeting on Tuesday night, the board discussed the impact that a Route 228 expansion project could have on the Mars Area Primary Center. The board then subsequently approved a motion in opposition to the current plan.
While looking at detailed plans for road work that is scheduled to take place over the next several months, the board became aware of a public access road that would run parallel to an expanded Route 228. PennDOT is planning to run that road just 28 feet from the corner of the Mars Area Primary Center where kindergarten students are dropped off and picked up.
The district sent a letter Monday to state Department of Transportation officials through legal council requesting the revision of the plans and the removal of the access road, but has not yet heard back. The board is urging concerned residents and community members to make their feelings on this situation known to state representation.
