Every junior at Butler School District will participate in an interview this week to give them a taste of what the real world might look like.
The students will be meeting with various industry professionals from the community depending on their interests and potential career paths. This can range from going to veterinary school and graduating into veterinarian jobs/apprenticeships, or going for something more physical as mechanics to work in labor jobs, etc. all that needs to be there to start with is that initial spark.
The effort was spearheaded by the district’s Guidance Department and specifically Shannon McGraw, who is the “School to Career and College Tech Prep Coordinator.”
Students were tasked with creating a resume and giving serious thought to a potential career. Each student was carefully matched to a professional who works in a field that is relevant to the student’s career path. Perhaps, one day in the future, students will be looking to a service like ARC Resumes (https://www.arcresumes.com/local/ohio/) to help them craft the perfect resume to help them get a job in the field they identified this weekend as a field they would like to work in.
“We’re just trying to match the kids with a field that they’re interested in and give them the opportunity to share their plan to pursue a career in that field, with someone who is in the field,” McGraw said in an interview. “If they want to be an attorney, they will be sitting with an attorney. We have some students interested in being a funeral director…they are sitting down this week with a local funeral director.” McGraw goes on to state that it is a great way for students to gain knowledge about their chosen career path, such as learning about the full history of caskets in the U.S. and going through the steps that happen behind the scenes at a funeral home.
Butler Radio’s own Tyler Friel will be conducting some of the interviews with students on Wednesday at the Butler Senior High School. Interviews will continue through Friday.
In addition to interview experience, some students have been given job shadow experiences, volunteer experiences…and some were hired for part-time work and internships.
