State Game officials are taking steps to more closely monitor a fatal brain ailment affecting a growing number of deer and elk in Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania is expanding the area it’s monitoring for chronic wasting disease among Pennsylvania’s deer and elk populations. New cases have been reported in Franklin, Juniata, Perry, and six other counties.
Among them is Bedford, where a total of 65 new cases were reported.
The disease doesn’t affect humans, though the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises people not eat meat from those infected animals. The PA Game Commission has set up what are known as Disease Management Areas in an effort to better monitor any further outbreaks.
New CWD cases were detected in the following counties:
Bedford (65), Blair (10), Cambria (2), Franklin (3), Fulton (33), Huntingdon (4), Jefferson (1), Juniata (1), Perry (1), and Somerset (3).
