The Grove City Police are reminding residents to use caution when dealing with unknown people following a recent scam.
Officials say that on June 13th, a local victim told them that she received a message on her home computer that led to a virus being downloaded to the device. The message contained a phone number and instructions to remove the virus.
Police say that the victim then spoke with a man claiming to be a Microsoft employee, who directed her to purchase over $1,000 in Google Play cards so the virus could be removed. The victim then provided the security codes of the gift cards to the unknown suspect.
Police caution residents to never provide any personal account information over the phone, and to not be convinced or drawn into purchasing gift cards to send to unknown people.
