Butler City Council has given approval for a youth outreach program to use part of a former school owned by another youth outreach program.
The conditional use application made by Specialty Outreach Services to allow three rooms in the former Institute Hill School to be used by Adelphoi Village was approved by council on Tuesday following a public hearing.
Specialty Outreach Services is a non-denominational counseling and athletic program for young people connected to the juvenile probation system that purchased the former school in 2015. Adelphoi is a day treatment program for roughly 30 kids in grades 6 through 12, which has been based at the YWCA for over 20 years.
With both programs in need of expansion and both helping a similar group of local residents, the request was made to the City Zoning Hearing Board, which recommended approval to council.
Utilization of the facility by Adelphoi is expected to begin with the 2019-20 school year.
