The annual Pennsylvania Farm Show is about to get underway.
This is the 104th year for the show, which kicks off Saturday in Harrisburg featuring over 12,000 exhibits including animal competitions and commercial vendors.
Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman and Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding helped unveil the annual half-ton butter sculpture, which encourages Pennsylvanians to support our state’s dairy industry.
The work of art features three mascots of Pennsylvania sports teams at a dairy-enhanced tailgate party including Steely McBeam, the Eagles’ “Swoop”, and the Flyers’ “Gritty”. Redding explains this year’s theme.
“Our theme for the 2020 Farm Show is Imagine the Opportunities,” Redding said. “It’s a theme that captures the Farm Show well, but it also transcends this event to agriculture as well as the Commonwealth at large.”
The sculpture is sponsored by American Dairy Association North East (ADANE). The butter was donated by Land O’ Lakes in Carlisle, Cumberland County. Fetterman hopes that the attention remains focused on farmers.
“This is a tribute to our farmers because they are the superstars,” Fetterman said. “And far too often we take for granted the food on our plate, where it came from, and the work that was done to get it there.”
Local U.S. Congressman Glenn G.T. Thompson will host a public forum listening session at the Farm Show Complex on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. to hear from farmers about agricultural issues.
