A new program at the Butler VA will aim to help better the health of veterans through music.
It’s called “Harmonicas for Health” and the Karen Dunn of the VA says the program will help Veterans who have COPD learn how to have better control of their breathing.
“The good thing about the program is that it includes music, so people will like it,” Dunn said. “And instead of mechanical things that we usually utilize for people that have lung issues, the harmonica does the same thing for that.”
Dunn said participants in the program across the country have reported decreased shortness of breath, but also an increase in quality of life.
“Looking at the socialization part of it is even more important,” Dunn said. “So some of these people who have all of these issues may isolate themselves inside their house. But if they come to this group, they’ll meet other veterans who are in the same situation.”
“It allows them to get out and socialize with other veterans and do something fun,” Dunn said.
The classes begin January 21st at the Abie Abraham Building. Registration is required by visiting the VA or calling Karen Dunn at 878-271-6484.
