A bill that would help to reduce or refund taxes has advanced through a committee chaired by a local lawmaker.
Republican State Senator Scott Hutchinson and the rest of the Senate Finance Committee recently approved House Bill 1076 which would expedite Property Tax Rent Rebate Program payments.
“This legislation amends the Tax Payer Relief Act to allow for property tax and rent rebate claims to be reimbursed in the state lottery funds immediately, as long as state funds are available,” Hutchinson said.
Previously the law directed those claims to be paid after July 1st. This bill also creates a Senior Tax Reduction Incentive Volunteer Exchange (STRIVE) program.
“Individuals who are 60 years or older volunteer in their school district where there property is located then receive a property tax credit in exchange for that service,” Hutchinson said.
The volunteer services provided by this program may not replace existing job positions and districts could find private or public sources to support the program.
This bill is moving forward as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic with a goal of providing residents with as much financial relief as possible as quickly as possible.
