Back on March 11th, thousands packed into the UPMC Event Center at Robert Morris University to watch the Butler Golden Tornado play Upper St. Clair in the second round of the PIAA state basketball tournament. Butler won—and it was one of the last sporting events, or public gatherings to happen.
The entire month of April was spent at home for most, as the entire state of Pennsylvania was under a stay-at-home order issued by Governor Tom Wolf.
For Butler County, the first true impact of COVID-19 was felt when public schools were shutdown on March 13th.
Butler County had its first confirmed case of COVID-19 on March 21st.
And then its first confirmed death on March 25th.
The coronavirus caused a whirlwind of cancellations and postponements of popular events in the near term and far into the future—not to mention the economy grinding to a halt.
Since that first COVID-19 case was confirmed in Butler County—there have since been over 180 confirmed cases and six deaths in the county.
Across the state, more than 46,000 have tested positive for COVID-19 with over 2,000 people having died because of the disease.
