Butler City Council is giving credit to City Police for the job that officers did at a rally downtown over the weekend as well as everything they continue to do in the local community.
Butler City Mayor Ben Smith spoke at the city council meeting Tuesday night.
“I want to publicly praise the city, county, township, and whatever law enforcement that were on the scene, especially Chief Bob O’Neill,” Smith said. “And I want to publicly praise many of the protesters who came out, weren’t causing any issues, and standing up for a cause they believe in by peacefully protesting.”
In addition, the mayor condemned those on both sides of the protest who took the opportunity to provoke and threaten the opposing side as well as officers. Arrests were made Sunday for failure to obey police orders as well as making terroristic threats.
Councilman Bob Dandoy also spoke about the positive impact being made by police in the Butler community.
“People have contacted me and told me how fantastic the police were,” Dandoy said. “It was more than just being there to enforce the peace. But they were talking with people; talking with shop owners; they really did a great job.”
Councilman Jeff Smith called for anyone determined to have instigated or attempted to incite a riot to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
