An event later this week will provide information for pet owners about the possible danger posed by algae blooms on local lakes and ponds.
Penn State Extension is offering a free webinar on Thursday beginning at 7 p.m. titled “Protecting Dogs and Animals from Harmful Algae Blooms”.
Extension water specialist Bryan Swistock explains about the potentially toxic effects of this common situation.
“There’s dozens of different toxins that different species of algae can produce,” Swistock said. “A lot of the toxins can effect an animals nervous systems that could lead to your pets having convulsions or stagger.”
“There’s a variety of other toxins that can have a pretty devastating and different effects on the body,” Swistock said.
Webinar participants will also learn how to protect animals before and after they are exposed to pond or lake water. Pre-registration is required by visiting the Penn State Extension website.
