With some Butler County students officially back in classes and more to follow next week, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is reminding motorists to look out for children getting on and off buses.
All drivers are required to follow Pennsylvania’s school bus stopping law which mandates stopping at least 10 feet from any bus that has its red lights flashing except if it is in the opposite lane of a divided highway. Violators could face a fine or license suspension.
Motorists also need to pay special attention when traveling through school zones as the speed limit is 15 miles per hour to allow for the possibility of students improperly crossing the street to get to school.
PennDOT also has tips for students to be good bus passengers including getting to the stop early to avoid having to run, checking repeatedly to make sure all cars have stopped before crossing the road, and never walk behind the bus or out of view of the driver.
