An effort is underway today to have people all across the country honor the lives lost during 9/11 by waving an American flag.
Wreaths Across America is spearheading a national effort to wave a flag today at 8:46 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m. and 10:03 a.m. to mark each plane crash.
Amber Caron of Wreaths Across America explains where the effort gets its inspiration.
“The Freeport Flag Ladies are three women in the state of Maine, that on 9/11 in the midst of panic and the chaos of the day, just needed to do something,” Caron said. “So they went to Main Street in Freeport and just started waving the American flag. And they got so much pride out of it, they decided that every Tuesday moving forward they would do that from 9 to 10 a.m.”
Caron said the weekly event became popular over the last 18 years—but the three women have since retired the effort due to health reasons.
