A new bill sponsored by a local state senator could change how sell-by dates are determined for milk.
Republican Senator Elder Vogel is the chair of the Rural Affairs Committee and he says the legislation would allow milk processors to use a “best by” or “sell by” date beyond the current 17-day regulatory limit.
“Department of Agriculture current 17-day milk code mandate presents a competitive disadvantage for fresh fluid milk,” Vogel said. “This bill addresses the disadvantage for fresh milk produced in the state by extending the shelf life and allows milk to travel further distances to market.”
Right now Pennsylvania and Montana are the only states with restrictive “sell by” dates.
The bill now goes to the house.
