The Butler Area School District plans to transition to remote learning for all students beginning next week.
According to Superintendent Dr. Brian White, this decision was made after close study of the most recent and most local data about COVID infection rates available.
“We decided to make our decision today because we wanted to make sure we start passing out materials to our students at the elementary level to try to make remote instruction as successful as we possibly can. We know this is not ideal for most of our students to be in remote instruction but we’re trying to do the best we can with it and start passing out materials to our students.”
Remote instruction will continue for secondary students so this decision mainly impacts families of elementary students who have been attending in person up to this point. The decision will be revisited on a regular basis:
“We’ve committed to assessing this on a week by week basis. One of the things we asked last spring of the state was to have local control and our school board passed a resolution asking for that. With that comes local responsibility and one of the things that we wanted to do was be able to look at data on a local level in a very timely manner. If the data and our staffing allows us to come back, we will come back.”
White also said that elementary teachers will be allowed into buildings to teach their lessons remotely from that setting.
