PennDOT crews are also getting ready for the big snow system.
Mark Mares of Butler County’s PennDOT workforce says trucks are out right now pre-treating roads in anticipation of Wednesday’s storm.
“You’re going to see the trucks today, they’re all over the county,” Mares said. “We’re doing the secondary roadway system with salt brine now because we like to stay on the priority roads during the snow storm.”
Mares said the salt brine helps prevent ice from building on the road.
“We put the salt brine down which creates a barrier between the road and the snow,” Mares said. “This way with the amount of snow we’re getting it doesn’t create an ice pack, which is hard to get off the road.”
Mares also is asking people to respect the PennDOT trucks on the road by giving them enough space and not passing them.
“Never, ever pass a plow truck. It never works out. What happens is that we have to call state police if we’re involved, which means that truck is down and can’t do its job,” Mares said. “You’re going to see a lot of plow trains with the amount of snow we’re getting today. Don’t go around the plow train.”
Mares also says if you have to travel today, make sure you give yourself enough time.
