A new bill proposed by a local lawmaker looks to ease the financial burden on boroughs for some highway maintenance.
State Senator Scott Hutchinson’s latest bill would require PennDOT to oversee the drainage facilities on state highways in boroughs with less than 2,500 people.
“There are very small boroughs that don’t have resources, or optimal equipment to do this work,” Hutchinson said on the floor of the Senate. “It’s only fair that PennDOT should maintain their drainage facilities on their highways.”
Hutchinson also added that when these laws were originally adopted, boroughs tended to be larger that townships. He hopes this move will continue to help boroughs’ budgets moving forward.
