Leaders of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education have decided to make one of the biggest changes to the system in decades.
PASSHE’s Board of Governors gave unanimous approval to a plan Wednesday afternoon that will see six higher education institutions become two by the end of 2022.
State schools California, Clarion, and Edinboro will fall under one administrative umbrella by merging, along with three other schools in the east.
PASSHE board member Samuel Smith says this move was necessary as the state system sees a consistent decline in enrollment.
“Doing nothing is absolutely nothing is absolutely the worst thing that we can do. We must take action,” Smith said. “Is this the perfect plan? Perhaps not.”
All campuses will still remain open, but the new arrangement could lead to major changes in faculty numbers and programming.
