Lawmakers received an update on the state’s historical markers at a hearing earlier this week.
The markers are those blue signs with gold text describing a historical event. But, the state’s Historical and Museum Commission Executive Director Andrea Lowery says that some communities have been reaching out to revise those signs.
“Citizens have periodically come to us with concerns about accuracy or corrections. We have in the last five years, revised seven [plaques], just to provide additional context,” Lowery said.
Lowery adds that while they take these requests into consideration, the commission is not actively looking to change these signs.
“It’s not our intent to be proactively revising markers. We’re looking at them as communities raise concerns.”
