The Butler Area School District is changing their policy regarding birthday treats.
A previous version of the Elementary Parent-Student Handbook stated “Please contact your child’s teacher before sending treats to school”.
After hearing concerns expressed by teachers through administration, such as the possibility of dangerous allergic reactions or added stress or hurt feelings to the classroom, the board considered two alternatives.
The first would have directed families to arrange for allergen-free treats to be provided by the district’s food service provider at a cost beginning at $1 per student. This proposal received four board member votes.
The proposal that received five votes and will be enacted moving forward states “Due to severe life threatening allergies and ensuring food sanitation, food treats/beverages are not permitted. If parents/guardians would like to send in a non-edible item (pencil, eraser, stickers, etc.), please contact your child’s teacher.”
