Joseph A. Herring, 89, passed away Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at Butler Memorial Hospital.
Joe was born October 25, 1932 in Auburn, PA, the son of the late Foster and Mary (Miller) Herring, relocating to Natrona Heights when he was a young boy. He would frequently talk about what it was like to grow up during the “Great Depression” and how he assisted his mother serve home cooked meals on their front porch to those in need.
Joe graduated from Har-Brack High School where he was a four year letterman as a running back for the Tigers. Three of his teammates, the Modzelewski brothers and Cookie Gilchrist went on to play in the NFL.
After Joe served in the Korean War, he returned home where he was employed at PPG Industries, the original glass plant in Creighton, PA for 12 years. During this time he met the love of his life, Harriet Botsis, at the Saxonburg Fire Hall Dance. For 61 years, they shared a beautiful life together.
He retired from the Butler Post Office after 27 years of service. Joe was an avid golfer who participated in several competitive golf leagues in the area. He enjoyed watching the Pirates, Penguins and especially the Steelers. He was never too tired to play “pitch and catch”, one of the greatest American past times a father and son could share. He was a member of St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and a member of American Legion Post #117.
He is survived by his son, Joseph A. (Sharon) Herring of Butler, his granddaughter, Sophia; his sister-in-law, Anne (George) Diener of Jamestown, OH; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Harriet who passed away November 6, 2021 and his sister, Jean McCorkle.
A special thank you to the staff of Butler Memorial Hospital and their ICU department.
