Several local schools will receive state funding as part of an annual grant program that looks to help with youth agricultural projects.
Department of Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding spoke about the “Ag and Youth” and “Farm to School” grants which provide direct assistance to youth-run projects, programs, and equipment purchases.
“We’re doing 48 projects this year in 28 counties across Pennsylvania. $530,000 investment in the Farm to School and a $2 million total in the program since the beginning,” Redding said. “It’s important to note, these make great investments in K-5th grade for Farm to School.”
Through the Ag and Youth program, the Butler Area School District will receive $25,000 for a new tractor and the Butler Farm Show has been awarded $12,500 for a 4-H picnic pavilion and youth activities.
The Farm to School program will allow the Seneca Valley Academy of Choice to receive just over $14,000 to create and maintain a hydroponics school and community garden while Haine Middle School has also been awarded just over $14,000 for hydroponic systems that will enhance curriculum and expose students to farming and nutrition.
“At the end of the day, it’s about resources to do what we want to do,” Redding said. “You need to make sure folks are thinking about agriculture as a place of meaningful employment.”
These ag education programs are funded through the 2022-23 PA Farm Bill. More information is available through the Department of Agriculture website.
