Winter weather hit Butler County hard Wednesday morning.
The first wave of snow showers hit the county just prior to 6 a.m. leading many districts to initially call for two hour delays.
But soon after, snow really picked up leading to slick roadways and many districts to opt for closing or remote learning.
The Butler County 911 Center has been handling calls for vehicle accidents all throughout the morning.
- A rollover crash was called in around 7:30 a.m. on I-79 Southbound near the Butler/New Castle exit. Dispatchers say one person suffered an injury and EMS crews were called for an evaluation.
- A three car crash happened around 8:20 a.m. on Adams Ridge Boulevard.
- Drivers also tell our newsroom that a number of vehicles were having trouble traveling on Route 228 during the morning commute.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has implemented travel restrictions today for a number of highways in the area. PennDOT reduced speed to 45 miles per hour on I-79 from Cranberry to Sharon. Commercial trucks are required to stay in the right hand lane only.
Interstate-79 is also under Tier 1 restriction, Also, restrictions are in place on PA Turnpike from New Stanton Exit 75 to Breezewood Exit 161.
Under Tier 1 restrictions, tractors without trailers, motorcycles, RVs, and commercial or school buses are not allowed on the highway.
PennDOT officials say motorists should avoid travel if possible and more restrictions could be added if the forecast changes. Updates will be made to the 511PA traveler information website and smartphone apps.
