Pennsylvania’s main dairy trade organization is looking at ways to assist struggling dairy farmers in the state.
The Milk Marketing Board wants to examine what would happen if the state’s minimum milk pricing structure is removed.
Under the current system, nearly 20 percent of the retail cost of milk goes to the store, around 30 percent goes to the processor, and just half goes to the producer.
Even though Pennsylvania ranks sixth in milk production, consumers pay some of the highest prices on average.
