Officials in the Department of Agriculture are continuing with their push to modernize the state’s dog law.
Ag Secretary Russell Redding says the Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement is in financial trouble and an updated law would help make it solvent.
“There is no general government appropriation for dog law. And what we’ve done over the past couple of years is transfer general fund revenue to support it. That’s not the case this year,” Redding said. “So it is 100 percent dependent on revenue that is generated. That is the only sustainable path forward.”
Redding says unfortunately that would mean a rise in dog law fees, but that it’s the only way to secure a healthy financial future for the bureau that oversees kennels and sales.
