There is now a new name for the recently merged Butler Health System and Excela Health organization.
Officials said the new group will be known as Independence Health System.
CEO Ken DeFurio said in a statement that “Independence represents important distinctions for the new system.” That includes the scope of services along with being committed to keeping those services local.
The merger officially happened in January of this year as both organizations were facing difficult financial futures. Recent filings by both Butler Health System and Excela Health show a combined loss of more than $62 million over the last nine month period, ending in March 2023.
Executives believe that this merger though will make the healthcare services offered in the region stronger.
“Clearly, we now have a greater opportunity and a broader footprint from which we can work together to improve the lives of our patients across our continuum of care,” Dr. David Rottinghaus, president of Independence Health Physician Network, said in a statement.
There are five hospitals included in the Independence group, including Butler Memorial Hospital, with more than 7,000 employees.
DeFurio expressed optimism moving into the future.
“I have spend months getting to know the doctors, nurses, and staff throughout the system. I can tell you that to a person, we take great pride in what we do,” DeFurio said in a statement. “Independence is a name that rings true to all of us, and it is at the core of our mission and vision.”
