The Pittsburgh Maulers defeated the Michigan Panthers 31-27 in overtime Saturday to win the USFL North Division title. The Maulers, making their first USFL playoff appearance after going winless last season, will meet Birmingham this Saturday in Canton, Ohio for the USFL championship. Birmingham defeated New Orleans 47-22 to win the South Division title last night.
Saturday’s game had a wild finish, with the Maulers scoring a touchdown with 44 seconds remaining to take a 27-24 lead. The Panthers tied the game with a 47-yard field goal with four seconds remaining to force overtime. In the USFL, the overtimes are decided by a series of three alternating plays from the 2-yard line. The Maulers scored twice while holding Michigan out of the end zone.
