Butler City and Butler County have ended an agreement of over 30 years concerning a local recreation space.
According to Mayor Bob Dandoy, the two municipalities decided to terminate the lease on the Whippo Avenue property owned by the County but maintained by the City for residents in that area.
City workers have removed the benches from behind the backstop as well as a sandbox in poor condition but Dandoy does not see that action as an end for activity at the space.
“We had some concern with liability there, so if anybody asks it’s ‘not the ending of [the park],'” Dandoy said. “It’s the beginning of the next chapter, because that equipment is no good and we don’t want children getting hurt.”
County officials are expected to discuss options before sitting down with city officials at a date to be determined to come up with a plan.
