With temperatures expected to reach 90 degrees today, the American Lung Association is reminding residents to take precautions regarding heat danger.
Breathing in hot air is a danger especially for those with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease as it can increase airway inflammation, constriction, or narrowing.
The American Lung Association recommends that residents monitor air quality, limit exercise in hot weather, drink plenty of fluids, spend time in air-conditioned areas as much as possible, make sure all necessary medications are available, and check on elderly or vulnerable family, friends, or neighbors.
The American Lung Association Help Line at 1-800-LUNGUSA is staffed by nurses and respiratory therapists to answer any questions about lungs including how to stay healthy in extreme heat.
