Butler County has spent part of the last year coming up with a reuse plan for the former AK Steel site, and that plan is being recognized.
At Wednesday county commissioner meeting, a representative from the Pittsburgh chapter of the Urban Land Institute awarded the county a trophy for “Excellence in Visionary Place.”
The plan is known as the Butler Bantam Redevelopment Master Plan, and was done with help from mossArchitects. The plan outlines a future design for the former AK Steel Site 2. It includes walkways, greenspace, housing, and business development.
While commissioners acknowledged that the plan would require millions to complete, they believe it has tremendous potential.
“If you look at the history of Lyndora, it was a vibrant corridor that was built by immigrants,” County Commissioner Leslie Osche said. “This type of development could bring a rebirth of that area.”
County officials also said that they have heard from five businesses expressing interest in the site.
