Pennsylvania’s top law enforcement officer is joining with colleagues across the country in asking the federal government to limit the use of artificial intelligence by telemarketers.
Attorney General Michelle Henry and 25 other Attorneys General recently sent a letter to the Federal Communications Commission in response to a Notice of Inquiry the agency posted in November.
Since robocalls that make use of an artificial or prerecorded voice are generally prohibited under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, Henry reasons that marketers looking to use AI to impersonate a human voice should be required to obtain written consent from potential consumer targets.
The FCC has not yet issued a response to the letter or made a ruling about the ability of AI technology to act as the functional equivalent of a live agent.
