U.S. Steel will pay a multimillion dollar fine due to a settlement after a lawsuit from an environmentalist group for violating clean air laws in 2018.
The Associated Press is reporting that the plant was operating without its desulfurization controls for three months, emitting clouds of sulfurous gas into surrounding areas. That led to more than 12,000 violations of air pollution permits and a lawsuit from environmental groups PennEnvironment and Clean Air Council.
U.S. Steel will pay $42 million with $37 million going towards improvements to pollution control at the Mon Valley Works plants. The remaining $5 million will fund clean air efforts.
This is the largest fines ever for a citizen-enforced lawsuit through federal clean air laws, according to the AP.
