Many Butler City landlords participated in a second gathering to discuss a plan that could lead to a revised Rental Ordinance and Program within the city.
Three current members of Butler City Council were joined by around 30 local property owners at a stakeholders meeting Thursday night to voice options about what might go into a new proposal.
Councilman Don Shearer admitted that the original draft of the ordinance mandating inspections had many flaws so it was discarded in favor of considering new ideas put forward by a group of landlords.
Their proposal would include a self-reporting checklist with pictures that both the landlord and tenant could access. The specific items on that list have not yet been determined. Also options for positive and negative reinforcement for completing the checklist were discussed.
Most of the landlords also appeared to be open to the idea of continued meetings and communication with council. Additional education for tenants and landlords would also be part of the program to make sure everyone is aware of their rights.
There is no date planned for a Council vote on the ordinance at this time but Shearer is expected to continue the discussion at the next Council meeting and seek approval to move forward with the ideas most landlords appeared to favor.
