The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is moving forward with plans to keep traffic moving, while still collecting tolls.
The commission approved the $50 million plan that would construct new gantries through various parts of the Turnpike in Western Pennsylvania.
Officials with the Turnpike say the gantries will be installed starting at the Ohio Connection area through New Stanton, and then stretch to Breezewood.
The gantries are an electronic system that can charge drivers without having vehicles slow down through the toll booths.
The commission aims to have the gantries installed and ready in Western Pennsylvania by 2027.
“The contracts are part of our move to Open Road Tolling, a safer, more convenient way for customers to travel,” Turnpike Press Secretary Melissa Orbenak said.
The Turnpike then plans to remove the traditional tolling plazas once Open Road Tolling starts in the West in 2027.
