As students return to school, one bus service is reminding parents how to keep their children safe on the bus.
When driving a vehicle as large as a school bus and with as many passengers in the bus, it’s crucial for children to stay in their seats.
Clyde Moore is the Safety Coordinator for Valley Lines and he stresses the importance of staying inside the seats and vehicle.
“The number one thing is keeping your body parts inside the windows. A lot of time during the summer months, windows are down, hands are out, and sometimes heads are out of the windows,” Moore said. “That is the number one safety aspect for kids to understand. Trees and telephone poles don’t give too much if your hand or head is out the window.”
Moore also drives a bus for Valley Lines and said that it’s a daily occurrence for drives to pass by stopped bus with lights flashing.
Drivers must stop 10 feet away from a school bus when children are being picked up or dropped off and wait until red lights have stopped before moving.
Fines for violating this can include 60-Day Driver’s License Suspension, Five (5) points on your driving record, and a $250 Fine.
