PennDOT is reminding drivers to celebrate responsibility for Labor Day weekend as they will be conducting checkpoint stops through Sunday.
Last year there were nearly 1,200 crashes, nearly 900 injuries, and 20 deaths during the Labor Day weekend due to alcohol, according to PennDOT data. Police also made over 500 DUI arrests.
Drivers will also be checked for illegal drugs along with prescribed medication that can impair drivers. There are approximately 250 Drug Recognition Experts or specially tried officers to look for drivers impaired by drug use in Pennsylvania.
These stops across the commonwealth are funded by nearly $6 million from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for impaired driving enforcement.
