A local lawmaker is introducing legislation he believes will protect the rights of parents and guardians in the medical decision-making process for their minor children.
Representative Aaron Bernstine has put forward a bill known as “Simon’s Law” which would require health care professionals or facilities to notify and obtain consent from parents before placing a do-not-resuscitate order on any patient under 18-years-old.
This legislation is inspired by the case of three-month-old Simon Crosier who passed away in St. Louis, Missouri about 15 years ago. A do-not-resuscitate order had been placed on Simon without the knowledge of his parents which resulted in a law passed in Missouri in 2019 followed by three other states.
This proposal will next move to the House Health Committee for further consideration.
