State House lawmakers have passed a bill that would provide additional funding to SNAP recipients to purchase fresh food.
The PA Food Buck Program would provide up to an additional 40 cents to every dollar to SNAP eligible recipients. To redeem the additional benefits, purchases would have to be made for food items such as fruits and vegetables.
The additional benefits would also be administrated through a selected PA nonprofit organization. Advocates of the bill say it will provide additional support to those in need and also increase demand at grocery stores, farmers markets, corner stores and other SNAP accepting food retailers.
The bill passed the state house 164-39 and is currently in the agriculture and rural affairs committee.
