A large amount of money has been deposited in Pennsylvania’s General Fund following an eight-year court battle.
According to Attorney General Dave Sunday, a litigation victory against the Pennsylvania Professional Liability Joint Underwriting Association (JUA) has resulted in $200 million being turned over to the state.
In 2017, an act passed by the state legislature called for the transfer of the multi-million-dollar surplus to the state’s general fund from the JUA which was established by the General Assembly in 1975 as an insurance option for high-risk medical providers.
JUA then filed suit against the Governor and Insurance Commissioner, represented by the Office of Attorney General’s Civil Litigation Section. A federal court recently ruled in favor of the AG, freeing up the transfer of $200 million to the general fund.
