Pennsylvania’s top law enforcement officer recently entered into a couple of settlements that will help to protect motorists.
Attorney General Dave Sunday announced a multi-state deal last week with automobile manufacturers Hyundai and Kia for the sales of millions of vehicles nationwide that lacked industry-standard anti-theft technology. This settlement will include up to $4.5 million paid nationwide to impacted customers with vehicles lacking protection.
Sunday also announced a settlement with Mercedes-Benz USA and Daimler AG in which those manufacturers allegedly violated state laws by equipping vehicles with software to get around emissions testing between 2008 and 2016.
The companies will pay $120 million nationwide with Pennsylvania receiving $6.6 million that will be shared by the AG’s office, the Department of Environmental Protection, and PennDOT.
Mercedes will also pay to install approved emission modification software on each of the affected vehicles. Finally, the companies must provide participating consumers with an extended warranty and will pay consumers $2,000 per impacted vehicle.
