The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Boston Red Sox 16-7 Tuesday in exhibition baseball. Pirates shortstop and baseball’s top prospect Konnor Griffin hit two home runs in back-to-back plate appearances in the game. The second shot in the fourth inning, travelled an estimated 440 feet. The first home run, hit in the second inning, was hit off Ranger Suarez, whom the Red Sox signed to a five-year, $130 million contract as a free agent in January.
The Pirates scored runs in every inning but the first and pounded 21 hits. Carmen Mlodzinski started the game for the Bucs and pitched two scoreless innings. He struck out the side in the bottom of the first inning. Infielders Nick Gonzales and Nick Yorke had three hits each. The Pirates are now 4-1 to begin spring training. They visit the Atlanta Braves this afternoon.
